Travel to / from School

A project undertaken with pupils in school for the YoungTransnet survey yielded the following statistics about the ways that pupils travel to school and how far they travel:

Pupil Arrival and Departure

Before and after school, most pupils use the main entrance gate on Dinant Avenue and a smaller number the other exit gate onto Third Avenue. Particularly at the end of school (3PM), it is important to note the following:

  • At least one member of the Senior Leadership Team is on duty after school for about 20 minutes;

  • The main drive-through gates will be closed prior to school closing and will remain closed during the pupil exodus;

  • Parents picking up pupils by car should park at the other end of Dinant Avenue well away from the school gates and not parked so as to cause an obstruction to local residents on the Avenue;

  • It is advised that visitors and those making deliveries avoid coming onto the school site between 3 - 3.15PM.

Visiting the School

Depending on the event you are coming to our school for, different parking arrangements will be in place. It should be noted that parking during the day is extremely restricted:

  • During the school day (not including pupil arrival and departure times), parents and visitors should use any free marked parking bays;

  • At the beginning or end of the school day, parents are not allowed to bring their car on site, particularly when pupils are exiting en masse. This includes coming onto the site before the end of the day with the intention of leaving during the pupil departure period (3 - 3.15PM);

  • For parents' consultation evenings and other evening events, extra parking is created by using the playground areas. Visitors are requested to follow the signs indicating where to park on these occasions.

Cycle Safety Advice

The school recommends the following safety precautions:

  • Obey the Highway Code;

  • Wear a cycle helmet;

  • Make sure lights and reflective clothing are worn when riding home on the dark winter nights - "See and be seen";

  • Be sure bicycles are in proper operating condition before each ride;

  • Watch for turning vehicles and vehicles exiting driveways, especially when riding down Dinant Avenue and other streets close to the school;

  • Always use designated cycle paths where available, and never cycle on pedestrian-only pavements;

  • Ride with traffic, never against it - "Go with the flow";

  • Stay alert. Always keep a lookout for obstacles in your path;

  • NEVER cycle on the school grounds. Get off your bicycle and walk it through the school to or from the cycle storage areas.

The following rules regarding cycles and cycle sheds should be observed:

  • Cycle storage areas are out of bounds during the school day;

  • Tampering with bicycles is not only against school rules, it is also highly dangerous and constitutes illegal criminal damage;

  • Make sure your bicycle is locked up at all times.

Remember to have a safe journey to and from school!
