Art Trip to Paris - July 2007

Over the 12 - 14th July pupils in Year 10 taking a form of Art for their GCSEs and those in Year 9 pursuing their Art Silver Award went on a trip to Paris in France, through which they were given the opportunity to broaden their views on what Art is, and gain a wider range of ideas with which to focus on.

It was indeed an early departure from the School (6.25am prompt), although the majority managed to fulfil this requirement, and so it was off to the port of Dover on a luxury ‘Hamilton’ coach. Our ferry left at 9am and we arrived in the port of Calais in France just over an hour later.

Glimpse of the Eiffel Tower

Shortly after catching the first glimpse of the Eiffel tower, we checked in at our three-star hotel - ‘Itineraires’ - before taking the Metro, the French version of the London Underground as it were, to the National Monument of the Arc de Triomphe. Most chose to spend a modest 5 Euros on arduously climbing the colossal number of stairs to the top, but reaped the reward of a 360 oview around the whole of Paris and its many wonderous aspects.

On the Friday there were a number of places to visit, so it was imperative that pupils were down for breakfast on time, although there were some who failed to do so! First, it was to the Louvre, where much of the photography, which the trip was specifically centred around, would start. It was only a 20 minute journey from the hotel to this beautiful art gallery and whilst waiting for tickets, all observed the magnificent architecture of the building itself and the three pyramids over its central kiosks, before entering. After that, it was to the town centre for some shopping in Paris, where a few people returned some two hours later, having spent all but five of their remaining Euros on some sports wear (mentioning no names!)

The Louvre

Following this, all visited the Pompidou Centre, which appears to have its interior structured on the outside where again, the view from the top of which was exquisite, and enjoyed perceiving some of the ideas of modern art in the 21st century. Next, a paddle cruise on the river of the Seine, when pupils admired some of the fantastic historic infrastructure present elsewhere, including the cathedral of Notre Dame, and the equivalent of the Botanic gardens.

Then it was to the Eiffel tower itself, although it was only possible to remain there for a short time for security reasons, yet most were able to obtain some decent photographs. Then it was back to the hotel, and some more French food for dinner, which not all enjoyed, but nevertheless it was a good experience.

On the final day, Saturday, all were packed and ready to leave back for the United Kingdom, but before this, there was one more place to visit; the Garden of Monet. Some of the boys were more exhilarated however by the fact that when we arrived, the French military was flying some of its planes around the area, so it was fairly noisy. Once everyone had bought their gifts, visited the house, and had something to eat, it was off home to Canvey again after an incredible and most excitable trip.
