Pupils from The Cornelius School gave up the early part of a Saturday evening to help the Rotary Club of Canvey Island celebrate the work of their president, Mr Steve Smith, at The Oyster Fleet Hotel.
The year 10 & Year 11 GCSE Steel Bands performed twice during the festivities, once as the guests arrived and were presented to the President and his wife ( Miss Fowler/Mrs Smith) and again as the partygoers sat down to eat. The bands played a variety of songs, some that were recognised and sung along to, such as Beautiful Sunday, and others that had been specially written for the ocassion such as Poppy and Babybelle .Two of the most popular were Never On A Sunday (the piece that Year 11 used in the their recent performance exams) and the more traditional Yellow Bird. Many people commented on how well the pupils performed and behaved stating that they were a credit to the school and their families. We have recently added some extra instruments to the band: two extra melody pans to make the tune easier to hear, an additional set of alto pans to strengthern the inne harmony and a set of three cello pans that play counter melodies at a lower pitch. For your chance to hear the new sound of our Steel Bands, please come along to our Summer Showcases in July- tickets will be available nearer the time.
