Year 7 Medieval Day
Medieval Day is run through the Combined Studies curriculum and takes place on Thursday 10th May as part of the pupils' study of Medieval Realms. The object of the day is to bring their studies to life by the pupils taking part in practical activities. The day is run through a group called 'Discovering Medieval'.
On Thursday 10th May two men and one woman came into the Karslake Centre to talk to us about what life was like in the medieval ages. They were all dressed up in replicas of what people in those times would have work in day to day life.
First of all they split us all up into 4 different teams. Once we had all been sorted into the teams they started to explain to us about what we were going to be doing there in the next two hours. They said that they would tell us about all of the different things that happened during medieval times. They also said they would ask some questions and by answering the questions correctly you earn points for your team. The team with the most points won at the end.
We then had to choose a lady of the manor, a hand maid for her,
a man of the manor and a body guard for him. They were then taken over to the clothes table and they were all dressed up in the clothes that the people they were supposed to have been would have worn (e.g. the lady of the manor wore expensive clothes, whereas her hand maid would wear a simple dress and apron). They gave everyone else in the teams a belt, a hat made from linen and a vest the same colour as your team so that you didn't miss out on dressing up. They all started to tell us about what the people who were lady of the manor, a hand maid, a man of the manor and a body guard would wear.
They then started to talk to us about the jobs they had and we all had the chance to make a box, some potions to sure a disease or an apron. We then asked about how much we would charge for it, what was it made of and who and what it was for.
Near the end of it they gave us the chance to look at medieval weapons or medical things. I chose to look at the medical things. It was really good as they showed you how they would treat different diseases using all different types of equipment. They used leeches which they used to drain blood from your body if you had too much. Plus they also had no anaesthetic in those days, so you may have been knocked out by getting drunk.
