Quotes

In key stage 4, three 'pathways' with an element of guided choice ensure that the needs and aspirations of the majority of students are met.

Ofsted, 2009

Year 10 pupils have recently enjoyed two days of events, taking part in Enterprise Skills for the Work Place activity. The event was based in the Karslake Centre.

The aim of the days was to give pupils the opportunity to work collaboratively with their peers, people from industry and the local community on a small business project. This involved pupils in:

  • Recognising, developing and applying their skills for enterprise and enjoyability;

  • Learning about the way business operates;

  • Learning from contact with personnel from different employment sectors;

  • Relating their experiences to their own abilities, attributes and achievements;

  • Undertaking tasks and activities set in work contexts;

  • Engaging with ideas and challenges;

  • Experiencing working practices.

Pupils worked throughout the day in small groups on a set challenge which involved pupils developing their communication, team building and presentation skills. The day also encouraged pupils to make informed choices and decisions relevant to the workplace.

Pupils took on different roles which included a Managing Director, Sales Team, Marketing Team, Design and Manufacturing. They evaluated the range of employability skills before taking on each role. Decision making, delegation and team work were key areas that were built into each challenge.

Having taken part in a Role Profiling session and identified key roles in the company, in their groups pupils were asked to set up a small public relations company and challenged to develop their ideas for promoting, marketing and presenting on various case studies. Pupils were helped by local Barclay’s business bankers who kindly volunteered their time and expertise.

A great day was had by all concluding with some fantastic team presentations and awards for winning companies.
