Duke of Edinburgh AwardThe Duke of Edinburgh Award aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development for young people, which is of the highest quality and widest reach. At Cornelius we provide an intensive training and support programme for the award. This includes expedition training, first aid, fire safety, climbing, volunteer work and physical training. There are three categories, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each award consists of 4 sections (5 in the gold), expedition, service, skill, physical recreation (and residential).

On average, 50 pupils in Years 9 and 10 participate in the award, run in school by Mr Bias. Pupils generally walk 15 miles over a two day expedition and are completely self sufficient. Diets consist of noodles, pasta and for the more adventurous curry in a bag!

The Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition was a great success this year with both groups completing their 2 day one night venture safely and self sufficient. The venture took the 8 pupils around the Canewdon area where they navigated through open country side, around rivers, and through country footpaths. The first day’s navigation finished up at Wallasea island where the pupils set up camp and cooked their own meals which they carried all day. After a nice nights sleep and a good hearty breakfast (for some), the pupils set off on their second days venture to complete their Bronze award. Well done to all pupils involved; Steven Desbourgh, Alex Hall, Richard King, Jack Norris, Lewis Smith, Danny Simpson, Alfred Ealham, & Conner White. R.Bias L.Dennis Mr Bias would like to thank all staff who support the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

To take part in the in the award you have to be 14yrs old, enthusiastic, fun loving and have a want to achieve. For more information have a look at the Duke of Edinburgh Award website at http://www.theaward.org. Or contact Mrs Hibben in the Art department.
