The school prides itself on its culture of collaboration, achievement and improvement between all staff and pupils. We firmly believe in a culture that creates a love of learning and which allows both staff and pupils to flourish, developing skills for lifelong learning.

Education is a vast and fast-changing environment. We embrace change that allows us to develop and improve, whilst maintaining stability through our culture. Although culture is difficult to define, our staff state that the following are the most important elements of the culture at our school:

  • Raising capability and helping people to learn by laying down the foundations for later success;

  • Setting challenging and achievable goals, and realistic expectations for all learners in the school, through incremental improvements;

  • Having a focus on the value added: holding hope for and investing in every learner;

  • Working together to learn from each other, share resources and ideas;

  • Recognising personal circumstances, making allowances and rewarding effort as well as attainment;

  • Having a deep desire for improvement;

  • Holding and maintaining high hopes and expectations;

  • Keeping grounded, through warmth, humour, repartee and the creation of a collegiate working environment.

In addition to these areas, we are working towards enhancing our culture to ensure:

  • the promotion of excellence where we create opportunities for everyone and widen horizons;

  • that everyone who can make a contribution, does.

Our culture is based on a core set of values that we promote as central to our community. Stemming from our strap handle:

Traditional Values . . . High Expectations . . . Excellence

our values are based on worth, respect, empowerment and success:
  1. We believe in the worth of the individual. Each learner should show self:

    • -discipline;

    • -respect;

    • -reliance;

    • -confidence and

    • -motivation and perseverance.

    We believe in the development of a ‘healthy body - healthy mind’ with learners having a positive self-esteem.

  2. Every member of the school and its community is valued. Each learner should show respect and responsibility towards:

    • themselves;

    • each other;

    • members of staff;

    • premises and resources and

    • members of the community outside school.

    To achieve this, it is important to:

    • treat others how you would expect to be treated;

    • be tolerant and inclusive;

    • value diversity: respect other’s beliefs, differences, lifestyles and ideas;

    • show concern and regard for others’ health and safety.

  3. Each learner is empowered to:

    • have equality of access;

    • take ownership of and responsibility for their own learning;

    • put into school what they expect to get out of it;

    • make the most of the opportunities presented to them.

  4. We aim for success and expect to:

    • be praised and rewarded for our achievements;

    • be motivated by high quality resources and stimulating lessons;

    • understand that success means different things to different learners;

    • celebrate the successes of others;

    • allow, through our actions, the same opportunity to achieve for all;

    • maintain a friendly, healthy, secure and safe working environment for all.

At Cornelius we will not tolerate those behaviours that threaten the values that we believe lead to success and that develop responsible members of the community:

  • bullying, cruelty or damage of any kind;

  • cheating or plagiarism in any work;

  • deceit, deception or lying to any member of staff;

  • irresponsibility and lack of care for others safety;

  • unco-operative behaviour;

  • impolite or discourteous behaviour.
