The Cornelius Vermuyden School and Arts College Awards Evening takes place yearly - every Autumn Term. The purpose of the evening is to celebrate achievement of pupils who have excelled in many areas in their studies.

Our guest speakers have been:

  • 2005 - Paul Karslake - Artist

  • 2006 - Cllr Tony Belford - Mayor of Castle Point

  • 2007 - Adam Leveridge - Ex-Pupil 1998—2003

  • 2008 - Terry Reynolds - Director of Learning at Essex County Council


Many thanks go to Paul Chesterton who was on hand to capture the event for the pupils, by providing individual portraits of each winner receiving their award.

Academic Awards:

These are awarded by each subject leader to the outstanding pupil in that subject each year. Academic subjects choose the pupil on the basis of test scores, coursework and overall grades. Subjects such as Drama choose the pupil who the department feels has contributed the most to the subject over the past year. Combined Studies awards two prizes per teaching set in Year 7; one for overall achievement and one for progress and effort.

In addition to the subject awards, there are the following academic awards:

  • Carol Chaplin Award - this is a shield donated by Carol Chaplin, a former Head of Learning Support at the school. It is awarded to a pupil who has made outstanding progress or overcome particular difficulties.

  • Student Support Services Examinations Award - this is awarded to the Year 11 student or students gaining the best overall public examination results.

  • Lee Hall Memorial Shield - given in the memory of the late Lee Hall - an ex-pupil - this award is for outstanding sporting achievement.

  • Headteacher’s Award - presented each year to the Head Boy and Head Girl in appreciation for all their hard work.



Sponsored Awards:

  • Petro Plus Scientist of The Year - sponsored by Petro Plus. The B.P. Shield is awarded to the outstanding scientist of the year, chosen from the whole school. Petro Plus also sponsor the award for the best scientist in each year.

  • The Learning Support Award for Progress and Achievement - sponsored by McDonald’s Restaurants.

  • Community Service Award* - sponsored by The Canvey Island Residents Association. The Canvey Island Residents Association present an annual award for contribution to community service.

  • Spoken English Awards - sponsored by the Rotary Club of Canvey Island. All year seven pupils take part in a demanding public speaking contest as part of Combined Studies lessons. The finalists all receive an award, and the winner and runners up receive a special award.

  • Information and Communications Technology Student of the Year - sponsored by First Data. All ICT Awards this year are sponsored by First Data. This particular award is for the outstanding ICT student of the year.

  • Proctor and Gamble Technology Award - sponsored by Proctor and Gamble. This is given for achievement in Design Technology.

  • Rotary Club Art Award - this is a major Art award, jointly funded by the Rotary Club and the Arts College. It allows for the purchase of equipment or materials.

  • Cornelius Vermuyden Catering Award for Progress - sponsored by the Cornelius Vermuyden Catering Manager.

  • English Award for Creative Writing - sponsored by The Rotary Club of Canvey Island.

  • Maths Award for Progress - sponsored by Aspect Contracts LLP.

* - previously known as the Ratepayers' Award.
