The Cornelius Vermuyden School and Arts College seeks to provide a quality education within a supportive, caring and disciplined environment to pupils of all abilities and to work with and for the local community. The education we offer recognises every person as an individual in his or her own right and aims to develop each child’s intellectual, cultural, emotional, spiritual, social and physical capacities to the full. This education celebrates the achievements of each individual and strives for excellence in the development and performance of every child in order that each is able to contribute positively to society at large.

As an Arts College we will raise standards in the Visual Arts for all our students across the ability range, leading to whole school improvement in performance. We will:

  • Our excellent ICT facilitiesbe active partners in a learning society with our local family of schools and our local community, sharing resources and expertise, developing and promoting good practice;

  • promote an arts educational culture, which is creative, expressive, technological and vocational;

  • make extensive use of ICT, exploiting new technologies in developing new approaches to teaching and learning across the curriculum;

  • raise the post-16 participation rate in the Visual Arts and provide young people with the skills needed to progress into further training, higher education and employment according to their individual abilities, aptitudes and ambitions;

  • develop and disseminate good practice to share with other schools, across Canvey Island, country-wide and beyond;

  • work closely with our local community: in the arts and among those we can reach through the arts, enriching, stimulating and enabling.

Pupils during Arts Week - June 2004

We believe that placing the Visual Arts at the centre of our school life will be transformational: for the arts in school, for our whole curriculum, for our relationship with local community, for the local arts community, for many individuals and groups who will be reached through arts activities.

We are convinced that being a successful Arts College will enhance all other areas of school life. We continue to commit ourselves to the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of the curriculum.
