 | Standards have risen since the last inspection and the school achieved its best GCSE results in 2007. In this school, 'every child does matter'.

Aimhigher is a national programme which aims to widen participation in higher education (HE) by raising the aspirations and developing the abilities of young people from under-represented groups.
The Government has set a target that by the year 2010, 50 per cent of those aged between 18 and 30 should have the opportunity to benefit from higher education.
Through our involvement in the local AimHigher Partnership, along with local schools and SEEVIC college, we want to:
-
raise aspirations and motivation to enter further and higher education among our pupils, who are from an area which has very low progression rates into higher education;
-
raise the attainment of pupils, so that they gain the academic or vocational qualifications and learning skills that will enable them to enter further and higher education;
-
strengthen progression routes into further and higher education via vocational courses, alternative education routes and increased personalisation;
-
raise pupils’ aspirations to enter futher and higher education;
-
improve the attainment, aspirations, motivation and self-esteem of able, gifted and talented pupils.
Young People into Higher Education (YPHE)
We have been involved in the YPHE project now for many years. This project is now delivered through the AimHigher partnership of schools, colleges and higher education institutions.
Our pupils take part in a programme extending over 3 consecutive days, 2 days at SEEVIC Sixth Form College and 1 day in a higher education institution such as University of Essex. In subsequent years our pupils take part in follow up sessions and engage in progression related activities in a variety of educational settings.
The aims of this project are to:
-
provide a learning experience outside of the school setting;
-
enable participants to make informed decisions;
-
provide information to facilitate decision making;
-
deliver this through a partnership between the student, their family and higher education, further education and the school.
Can you help us?
Are you an ex-pupil of Cornelius? Have you either:
-
gone on to further or higher education, or
-
been to further or higher education and are now pursuing a career?
If so, we are looking to put together case studies showing how ex-pupils have gone on to continue their education, what they hope to do after their education or if past that point, then how they have developed their career. These case studies will feature on this page of the web site and will be used in school to raise aspirations and motivate pupils to look beyond life at school and aim for more.
If you are interested in being the subject of a case study, please contact Mr R Cawley (Deputy Headteacher) by one of the following methods:
You will need to provide a photograph (or we can take one) and some details regarding your education and / or career.
Case Studies
Already we have ex-pupils wanting to take part in developing case studies for our project! As they are completed, they will be added below:
Additional Information:

University of Essex Trip (7 December 2005)
30 pupils from Years 10 and 11 spent a day at University of Essex (Colchester) on a ‘campus day’.
University staff gave a talk on ‘why university?’ and university students gave us a tour of the lecture theatres, sports facilities, accommodation and social venues. After lunch, pupils made a mock up of a university prospectus. Here’s what the pupils said about their day out:
“Really good, it really opened my eyes” - Kieran Davies
“It was an enjoyable day out. It gave us all a good idea of what it is like to go to university” - Kelly Jonas
“Before, I didn’t want to go to university; now I am actually considering it” - Molly Collisson
“The best part of the day for me was being shown around and seeing how much there is to do. I like the fact you can meet loads of new people from all around the country and even the world” - Michaela Roberts

Theatre-In Group (24 February 2006)
Pupils spent time watching the AIMhigher "Live and Learn" production by the Theatre-in group in school. This play was written to support option choices being made by Year 9 pupils. Entertaining and thought-provoking, the show promotes the routes and options available post-16. It explores learning styles in a fun and informative manner and encourages young people to embrace learning culture and AIMhigher in their chosen route. The play also informs of the qualifications available through Apprenticeships, school, college and university.

Southend FC Trip (2007)
A few weeks ago myself and 5 other students went to Southend United Football stadium for a literacy programme to see what we could do to improve our English skills.
During the day we solved the ‘Simpson’s Murder Mystery’ – this helped us back up our work by giving the evidence. Then we had a game of Countdown. We had a tour of the stadium, we went into the players changing rooms, and Steve Tilson was there as well.
Later on a few of us were chosen to play on the Playstation 2, we played ‘FIFA ‘06’. The aim of this was to write a report on all the key events that occurred in the game. The day in all was fantastic and I’d love to do it again.
