Accessibility

As is the nature of any school web site, we cater for many audiences online. We strive to produce a site which is accessible to those varied audiences. We hope that the site is already intutitive enough to use and its layout and navigation features make access transparent: the information provided here is an addition, for those who wish to know more about what we have been and are attempting to do.

The 2005 Redesign

Since 2005, we have been undertaking a large expansion of the site in order for us to make more effective use of our online presence. The basic design comprises of the following key components:

  • text only option and accessiblity links at the top of each page;

  • all key pages listed on the left hand side of each page for easier navigation;

  • coding to enable text to be enlarged through Internet Explorer if needed;

  • all images used in our site are given appropriate alternative text (ALT) descriptions, as required by internationally-recognised Web accessibility guidelines;

  • the use of proprietary publishing formats such as Shockwave Flash and other media formats requiring third-party plug-ins (except the use of Adobe Acrobat) is minimised to those areas of absolute use. The use is less stringent where pages are created for the purpose of learning, where pupils may be using proprietary publishing software in order to learn web site design or by teaching staff to aid learning - their accessibility is just as important;

  • JavaScript is used to avoid creating accessibility barriers.
